I wanted a new website and Facebook ads were telling me that I could make a really lovely one all by myself. Google told me that several providers would love to help me make one for FREE!! A couple of hours of research later I decided that the one advertising on Facebook was costing more than I needed to pay and the one that offered by a long way the cheapest hosting deal (few things are ever entirely free) didn’t have great reviews.
I picked LCN.com. They offered middle of the road pricing and GREAT local customer service at a call centre in England. They even directed me to resources I could look at before I became a customer so that I could decide if I had enough skill to get started on making my own website. I have been on the phone to them several times and had great help every time and all for only the price of my annual hosting package, which is really quite modest.
It’s amazing how much knowledge is shared out there on the web. I found Tyler Moore’s free one hour tutorial and WordPress.org appears to have the answers to all questions (so long as I can work out what question to ask!).
But it still wasn’t happening. I had all the required resources in place, I had expert knowledge immediately available on line and all I had to do was sit down and do it; build the pages and write the material for them.
I don’t know about you but I find the blank sheet really quite intimidating. And then I got inspired. What if I recruited my long time friend and former colleague, Bonnie, into partnership for the creation of this website. She has been recently widowed and was feeling sad and a bit lost. I am OK in the digital world but she is better. I can write quite well but it’s not easy to be one’s own editor.
In spite of her living on the west coast of the United States and being 8 hours behind me she thought it was a great idea. I work through the day and some time after 4pm my time we have a Facetime meeting over coffee to review progress against the goals set for the day. Our Facetime meetings deliver the creative ideas that come from synergy and have injected the process with energy and fun for both of us.
Sometimes what you know really isn’t enough. Thanks Coach Bonnie for being the difference that helped me get this one off the blocks much quicker and better than would otherwise have been the case! I’ll talk to you a bit later to day. I have to go out now.
